On Tuesday 26th November under the patronage of HE Governor of Irbid Mr. Radwan Al Otoum, the inauguration of the first state-of-the-art recycling facility was held through a ribbon cutting ceremony in Truck City, Irbid. Remarks were delivered by the Head of European Union Delegation HE Ambassador Maria Hadjitheodosiou and HE Hussein Bani Hani, Mayor of Greater Irbid Municipality.

During the ceremony an overview of the facility was provided by project manager Eng. Dora Biondani. Currently having an unprecedented high production of waste daily, Jordan is facing a challenging situation. The constructing of this pilot project is a very much needed first step towards recycling. The facility is designed to process up to 8 tons/day of paper and newspaper waste and 12 tons/day of plastic waste. Plastic waste will become granulate to be introduced again in the production process. Paper waste will become a new product to improve insulation in the construction sector. This new insulation product is estimated to have high potential in Jordan, as often old building practices lack of proper insulation.

The facility has also been designed to be eco-friendly. 100 kw of Photovoltaic Panel help to reduce to operative costs while a wastewater treatment unit gives the opportunity to reuse the same water and reduce the environmental impact of the process.

The facility, owned by Greater Irbid Municipality, will be operate by JOECO under an Operational Agreement.

The challenges in the waste management sector are still many. A panel discussion during the inauguration event shed light on the perspective of most stakeholders in the waste management sector. The Panel was represented by (Eng. Reham Jamal) for the Greater Irbid Municipality, by (Dr. Mustafa Jaar) for the private sector, (Mrs. Amal Madanat) for the civil society, and last but not least by (Eng. Hanan Hamad) for the Directory of Environment in Irbid. Including the valuable insight of sector expert Eng. Silvia Gibellini. The extreme impact of waste reflects the high interest in the sector, which in turn necessitates a collaborative effort to achieve the desired improvements.

Circular Economy in waste management has the potential not only to improve the market but also to increase job opportunities (41 workers were hired to operate the facility and perform waste collection). The next proposed step is increasing awareness and improving waste collection at household level. Under the framework of the E4 project 20 school in Irbid have benefitted from awareness campaigns and students demonstrated interest and understanding of the urgency to start good practice in order to create a change in the sector.

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has been witnessing improvement with continuous support of the international donors and now is the time to accelerate the process by becoming part of the change.

In our continuous pursuit to stay up-to date on Environmental issues in the country, we have attended the “German-Jordanian Symposium on Waste Management and Recycling”, which was facilitated by the Jordanian Chamber of Industry and MENA business in cooperation with German RETech Partnership, BlackForest Solutions GmbH and the Professorship of Waste and Resource Management of the University of Rostock on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).

Representatives from the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Local Affairs, the Greater Amman Municipality, the Chamber of Industry, the EBRD Bank, and the German industry delegates gave very interesting lectures on the current situation of Waste Management and Recycling in the region and Germany. Jordanian private industry participants received the chance to exchange information and know-how with the German companies who are working in the same field.

A view from the Top:

After completion of main construction works on the facility, Greater Irbid Municipality is working on providing the facility with electricity and pavement. With the provision of electricity, JOECO will be able to test equipment that has arrived at the plant. Our team is looking forward to this exciting month, which will witness the delivery of both the paper-recycling lane and the plastic-recycling lane.

In addition; during his visit to Jordan, ICU director was given a tour to the facility, which was an opportunity to show-case accomplishments that have been achieved so far.

In line with JOECO’s efforts to support the overall scope of ICU’s E4 project which is funded by the European Union and entails “Enhancing Employment Opportunities in Jordan’s Energy and Environment Sectors”, some of our employees are receiving a training course in up-cycling waste material into furniture. This training course and workshop, in which our factory’s furniture is being produced, is yet another initiative by the ICU to emphasize the recycling value and its benefits in all progressions of this project.

Our dedicated JOECO team has since start of employment been busy finding solutions to our biggest challenge of finding separated plastic waste to be used in our soon to be completed recycling factory. With Support of the ICU and the Greater Irbid Municipality we are proud to introduce our first campaign, which entails awareness towards the need of separating plastic waste and thereafter collecting the waste and using it in our pilot recycling plant.

The campaign includes a few of the most famous wedding halls in Irbid, whose owners have agreed to the importance of our cause “Our World Free from Waste”, and who are supporting our staff in spreading awareness to their hall employees and as well their customers.

The begin of the Jordanian famous wedding season, will mark the kick start of our initiative and we will be separating and collecting plastic waste to be used in our facility.
